Enhancing Urban Climate Resistance Through the Application of Selected Strategies and Technologies

Author(s): Caroline Hachem-Vermette

Adapting cities for climate resilience is crucial as climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. This study outlines a comprehensive set of resilience strategies aimed at enhancing urban resilience across four key domains: water, food, shelter, and energy. These strategies, applicable to both new and existing neighborhoo ...

Reduction of Cr(VI) by Bacillus toyonensis LBA36 and its effect on radish seedlings under Cr(VI) stress

Author(s): Tan A; Wang H; Zhang H; Zhang L; Yao H; Chen Z;

Chromium, being among the most toxic heavy metals, continues to demand immediate attention in the remediation of Cr-contaminated environments. In this study, a strain of LBA36 (Bacillus toyonensis) was isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil in Luanchuan County, Luoyang City, China. The reduction and adsorption rates of LBA36 in 30 mg·L-1 Cr-containin ...

Manganese-enriched CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals for self-assembled supercrystals

Author(s): Lapointe V; Majewski MB;

The self-assembly of CsPbCl3 perovskite nanocrystals and their Mn2+-enriched analogs into supercrystals is reported. Increasing Mn2+ content in the nanocrystals leads to formation of larger, increasingly uniform cubic supercrystals that eventually become rod-like with higher photoluminescence quantum yields.

Active Child, Accomplished Youth: Middle Childhood Active Leisure Fuels Academic Success by Emerging Adulthood

Author(s): Kosak LA; Harandian K; Bacon SL; Fitzpatrick C; Correale L; Pagani LS;

ackground/Objectives: Physical activity is an important protective factor throughout life. However, little research has observed the associations between the practice of physical activity and academic success longitudinally, and none have done so with a pan-Canadian sample. This article aims to examine the prospective associations between active leisure i ...

Comprehensive Analysis of Age- and Sex-Related Expression of the Chaperone Protein Sigma-1R in the Mouse Brain

Author(s): Tarmoun K; Lachance V; Le Corvec V; Bélanger SM; Beaucaire G; Kourrich S;

Sigma-1R (S1R) is a ubiquitously distributed protein highly expressed in the brain and liver. It acts as a ligand-inducible chaperone protein localized at the endoplasmic reticulum. S1R participates in several signaling pathways that oversee diverse cellular and neurological functions, such as calcium and proteome homeostasis, neuronal activity, memory, a ...

"We don't do any of these things because we are a death-denying culture": Sociocultural perspectives of Black and Latinx cancer caregivers

Author(s): Nwakasi C; Esiaka D; Nweke C; Chidebe RCW; Villamar W; de Medeiros K;

Objectives: Cancer is an enormous public health burden among Black and Latinx cancer survivors, and they are at risk of facing barriers to accessing cancer treatment and support in the United States. This study explored the unique challenges and experiences faced by Black and Latinx cancer survivors through the lens of their caregivers, including the spec ...

Fe/GMP functional nanomaterial enhancing the denitrification efficiency by bi-signal regulation: Electron transfer and microbial community

Author(s): Hao Y; Guo T; Li H; Liu W; Chen Z; Zhang W; Wang X; Guo J;

A novel functional nanomaterial composed of guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and Fe enhanced denitrification efficiency by regulating electron transfer and microbial community. Fe/GMP enhanced nitrate (NO3-) degradation rates by 3.00-fold in serum vial batch experiments, with a rate constant of 17.39 mg/(L·h) in sequencing batch reactor. Fe/GMP-mediated inte ...

Testing the predictions of reinforcement: long-term empirical data from a damselfly mottled hybrid zone

Author(s): Arce-Valdés LR; Ballén-Guapacha AV; Rivas-Torres A; Chávez-Ríos JR; Wellenreuther M; Hansson B; Guillén RAS;

Theoretical work suggests that reinforcement can cause the strengthening of prezygotic isolation in sympatry by mitigating the costs of maladaptive hybridization. However, only a handful of studies have simultaneously tested multiple predictions of this theory in natural populations. We investiga ...

SPOT: A machine learning model that predicts specific substrates for transport proteins

Author(s): Kroll A; Niebuhr N; Butler G; Lercher MJ;

Transport proteins play a crucial role in cellular metabolism and are central to many aspects of molecular biology and medicine. Determining the function of transport proteins experimentally is challenging, as they become unstable when isolated from cell membranes. Machine learning-based predictions could provide an efficient alternative. However, existin ...

Family shapes child development: The role of codevelopmental trajectories of interparental conflict and emotional warmth for children's longitudinal development of internalizing and externalizing problems

Author(s): Zemp M; Fang S; Johnson MD;

This study aimed (1) to identify distinct family trajectory profiles of destructive interparental conflict and parent-child emotional warmth reported by one parent, and (2) to examine whether these codevelopmental profiles were associated with the longitudinal development of children and adolescents' self-reported internalizing and externalizing probl ...
